Tekno Reminder: MMS on iPhone coming Friday, or simply do it today

Many of you already know MMS is coming to the iPhone this Friday, Regardless, we are almost done with the wait people. AT&T is finally putting a go on MMS.

Sure, this day marked in your calendars but would any of you like to take bets on whether or not the network will buckle when you have every single iPhone owner sending picture after picture all day long? Don’t be too upset when the person you are sending the image to tells you they have not gotten it yet. That’s more than likely to happen unless AT&T really used this extra time wisely and beefed up their network like they claimed in preparation for the flood gates they are about to open…

Still, according to some of our readers, it seems as if AT&T is currently sending out text messages reminding you of this day that so many of you cherish.

“Picture &video message(MMS) will be available for iphone on 9/25. While we prepare your account for MMS capability, the current ” view my message” experience will be turned off but your ability to send and receive text messages will not be affected.”

How many of you have received this message?

1. First, you need to download the updated AT&T carrier file… The AT&T 5.1 carrier file can be downloaded here.

2. Then, you’ll need to tweak iTunes slightly so that it will let you update the carrier file manually. Here is how you do that:

For Mac – Open up Terminal, and at the prompt type defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE and hit Enter.

For Windows (32-bit) – Go to Start > Run and type in command, then hit Enter. Then, at the prompt, type “C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 and hit Enter.

For Windows (64-bit) – Go to Start > Run and type in command, then hit Enter. Then, at the prompt, type “C:\Program Files(x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 and hit Enter.

3. Then, plug your iPhone into your computer and fire up iTunes. Once it’s all loaded, go to your iPhone in iTunes and hold down SHIFT (or OPTION on the Mac) while clicking on the Update button in the main iPhone panel (not the sidebar). This brings up a dialog box that allows you to choose a file for updating. Go to where you saved the AT&T carrier .ipcc file and open it up. You will need to choose the .ipcc file type from the files of type drop-down menu in the dialog box in order to find it. This takes just a moment to update.

4. REBOOT YOUR IPHONE!

Guide: Enable MMS on iPhone 3GS 3.0 AT&T

For one reason or another AT&T really does not want iPhones to have MMS on their network until the end of summer.  They have been trying pretty

darn hard to stop this, even disabling it on some of the people who enabled it!  However if we can change the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) in AT&T’s database it should not get disabled, as AT&T will not know you have an iPhone.

This task will involve Social Engineering; to edit their database, while this is not illegal AT&T may complain to you. Continue reading “Guide: Enable MMS on iPhone 3GS 3.0 AT&T”
